چکیده

Three of the major problems in qualitative spatial reasoning and robotics are localization, exploration, and navigation in known or unknown environments. This paper investigates how far different qualitative methods based on angle information, most of them originally invented for the representation of spatial knowledge only, are well-suited for these tasks. It turns out that with panoramas, which are special roundviews, the qualitative localization problem can be solved in a satisfiable manner. It is stated that the exploration problem, i.e. qualitative map building, remains difficult for all approaches. In addition, qualitative navigation operators for robot control are discussed.

An experiment in integrated exploration

Integrated exploration strategy advocated in this paper refers to a tight coupling between the tasks of localization, mapping, and motion control and the effect of this coupling on the overall effectiveness of an exploration strategy. Our approach to exploration calls for a balanced evaluation of alternative motion actions from the point of view of information gain, localization quality, and na...

This paper is the second part of the author’s contribution on the topic of Safe Navigation for Indoor Mobile Robots. It presents a new solution to the exploration, self localization and map building problem taking advantage of the sensor-based navigation framework presented in the paper: Safe Navigation for Indoor Mobile Robots Part I: A Sensor-based Navigation Framework. The model of the indoo...

A Qualitative Approach to Localization and Navigation Based on Visibility Information

In this paper we describe a model for navigation of an autonomous agent in which localization, path planning, and locomotion is performed in a qualitative manner instead of relying on exact coordinates. Our approach is grounded in a decomposition of navigable space based on a novel model of visibility and occlusion relations between extended objects for agents with very limited sensor abilities...

Bayesian Exploration for Mobile Robots

This work addresses the problem of robot exploration. That is, the task of automatically learning a map of the environment which is useful for mobile robot navigation and localization. The exploration mechanism is intended to be applicable to an arbitrary environment, and is independent of the particular representation of the world. We take an information-theoretic approach and avoid the use of...
